Episode 128 : Bests
The end of the year brings about a torrent of “best of lists.” We think about the yearly ritual of choosing what was best and worst in a given orbit of the sun.

Patrik, if you think Dooce isn’t famous, she was one of the clues on Jeapordy this week. That is like, mega major ultra status.
Anyway, gwen is famous now too it seems. Exciting!!

Aw shit, I have one of those zen clocks. I do like that when the power goes out I still get up more or less on time. You two make me laugh. Thanks.

Interesting comments about the past/future relationship. The reason that older people think about the past is because the future for them is depressing. You both are young and have your whole life in front of you. You can change things. For older people the world has stopped listening. Older people have seen how society demonizes age, how employers pass them by, how their parents have died of debilitating disease, how the loss of a partner results in loneliness, how loss of ambulatory skills shrink their world, how their kids shove them in a corner, how their financial dependence on others and gov’t increase. Very few grow old gracefully. Nobody in their right mind wants to go there. My dad at 91wants to be Benjamin Button. Looking back brings happiness of a bygone era, former friends no longer on this planet, your child’s marriage, the birth of a grandson. You (Patrick/Gwen) look back and you see high school, we look back and we see life. Nothing wrong with that. One day you’ll be there.
